Az Üzlet a korzón nem csupán és nem egészen holocaust-dráma: az egyén felelősségéről, erkölcsi kötelességéről szóló megrázó alkotás. A film főhőse Tono, az ács, akit zsörtölődő felesége arra biztat, hogy kollaboráljon, keressen minél több pénzt. Tono egy kis zsidó üzlet árja ellenőre lesz, és amikor megtudja, hogy az üzlet tulajdonosnőjének nincs vagyona, sőt bevétele, és ráveszik arra, hogy ő maga segítsen neki, egyre közelebb kerül a zsidó közösséghez. A tragédiába torkolló mentés torokszorító. A cseh újhullám eme remekműve volt az első nyolc szekvenciás film, struktúrája, felépítése inspirálta a legfontosabb hollywoodi filmiskolákat, olyan forgatókönyvírás-oktatókat, mint Syd Field, aki erre a filmre – is – építette paradigmáját.

Joseph Kilian neve nem véletlenül juttatja eszünkbe Joseph K-t. A film története A per ártatlanul megvádolt főhőséét. A bürokrácia útvesztőiben kóborol Harold, eltűnt ismerősét, Joseph Kiliánt keresve. Macskát bérel egy üzletben, majd, amikor az állatot vissza akarja szolgáltatni, az üzlet már zárva van. Valójában ez az abszurd film a cseh avantgárd egyik legfontosabb műve, és nem elsősorban macskákról és a címszereplőről, hanem Párágáról, a totális rezsimekről, az azok okozta zsigeri félelemről szól. A Pavel Jurácek írta – a Capek és más jelentős cseh írók világához is közel álló - filmet sokan tartják, zseniális képei ötletei, gegjei okán, az egyik legfontosabb és legmerészebb cseh filmnek. The Shop on Main Street is not only and not altogether a Holocaust drama: it is a soul-stirring film about the responsibility, the moral obligation of the individual. The hero of the film is Tono, the carpenter, who is exhorted by his grumbling wife to collaborate, and to earn as much money as possible. Tono becomes Arian supervisor of a little Jewish shop, and on learning that the owner of the shop has no assets of money, nor any income, he gets persuaded to help her, drawing ever closer to the Jewish community. The rescue operation turns into a harrowing tragedy. This first eight-sequence film was a masterpiece of the Czech new wave, its structure and composition inspiring the most important film schools of Hollywood, screenwriters like Syd Field, whose paradigm was based – also – on this film.

With short film: Josef Kilian (1963)

It is not by chance that the name Joseph Kilian reminds us of Joseph K., and the story of the film of the innocently charged hero’s in Kafka’s The Trial. Looking for Joseph Kilian, his lost acquaintance, Harold strolls about in the maze of bureaucracy. He hires a cat in a shop, and when he wants to return her, the shop doesn’t exist anymore. This absurd film is indeed one of the most important products of the Czech avant-garde, and it is not first of all about cats and about the main protagonist, but about Prague, the totalitarian regimes, the visceral fears caused by them. It was written by Pavel Jurácek, and due to its peerless imagery, its gags, this film – close to the world of Čapek and other significant Czech writers – is considered by many as one of the most important and boldest Czech films. While it is only forty minutes long.
