Az Ez történt Budapesten a hazugságspirálba keveredő, mindent összekutyuló figurák filmje. Főszereplője – és nem csak ebben hasonlít a Coen-testvérek filmjére, a Kegyetlen bánásmódra – két válóperes ügyvéd. A lebukott férj, amikor megpillantja a feleségét, arra kéri az ügyvédet, akihez feljött Pestre, hogy mondja azt, hogy a társaságuk fényét emelő hölgy a neje. Dr. Szikszay, az ügyvédnő, nem minden hátsó szándék nélkül, bele is megy a hazugságba. A két jogász az ellenérdekű feleket képviseli a perben. Hamza D. Ákos a Külvárosi őrszoba, az Ördöglovas rendezője nagyszerű stábbal dolgozott. Nem csak a szerző, Nóti Károly volt a könnyű vígjátékok mestere, ahogy Eiben István a kameráé, de még a vágópultnál is egy nagyszerű mester ült: a később jelentős tanárrá és rendezővé avanzsáló Máriássy Félix.

This Happened in Budapest is a film about some characters messing up everything while entangled in a net of lies. Its protagonists are – not only herein reminiscent of the Coen brothers’ Intolerable Cruelty – two lawyers specialising in divorces.  Beholding his wife, the husband caught in flagrante, persuades the lawyer to whom he has come to Budapest, to say that the charming lady of their company was his wife. She, dr. Szikszay, the other lawyer, accepts the lie, though not without some secret motive of her own. In the trial, the two lawyers represent the respective parties of opposite interests.  Ákos D. Hamza, director of Suburban Guard Room, and of Ördöglovas (The Devil’s Rider), had an excellent team at his disposal. Not only the writer Károly Nóti, who was a master of light comedies, like István Eiben of the camera, but even the editor was an excellent master:  Félix Máriássy, later to become a renowned teacher and director himself.
