A forgatás 1976 februárjában kezdődött a Fülöp-szigeteken, hatalmas ambícióval, bizarr botrányokkal, egy olyan környezetben, ahol fikció és kegyetlen valóság minden pillanatban összecsúszott. A rendező felesége, Eleanor Coppola a filmet forgalmazó United Artists felkérésére végig dokumentálta a forgatást, miközben a saját naplójához a férjével folytatott privát beszélgetéseket is rögzítette. Az anyagból elkészült dokumentumfilm sokkal több lett, mint sosem látott behind-the-scenes felvételeket bemutató werk. The monumental, mad vision of Apocalypse Now is the motion picture summation not only of the Vietnam war but all human destruction. Filming started in February 1976 

in the Philippines accompanied by vast ambitions and bizarre scandals, and in an environment where fiction and harsh reality were constantly at each other’s throats. 

At the request of distributor United Artists, the director’s wife, Eleanor Coppola, documented the entire shoot while also recording in her personal journal private conversations she had with her husband. The documentary that came out of this material is far, far more than merely a werk film showing us never screened behind-the-scenes footage. It demonstrates how the artist’s psyche is shaped during a creative process not without its own dangers.
