A pazarul tehetséges, Magyarországról 1939-ben távozó, s Hollywoodig jutó Tóth Endre (André De Toth) ötletéből készült film új irányt mutat a westernműfaj történetében, azt 

a fordulatot dokumentálja, amikor az egykori rettenthetetlen pisztolylövész tétova, önkereső, sebezhető figurává alakul. A Gregory Peck által alakított főszereplő nem dicsőséges legendaként, hanem múltja árnyaitól kísérve érkezik a kisvárosba, amelyet nem kíván megmenteni és megtisztítani. A film zárójelezi a hősi mítoszt, és hatalmas lépés a western históriájában a karakterközpontú ábrázolás felé. 

The movie – that came from the pen of the enormously talented Endre Tóth (André De Toth) who quit Hungary in 1939 and made it all the way to Hollywood – signposted a new direction in the history of the western genre. Astonishingly, it documents the transformation of the once fearless gunslinger into a hesitant, vulnerable figure. The lead played by Gregory Peck arrives in a small town not as glorious legend but someone haunted by his past with no interest in saving it or righting wrongs. The film represents the endpoint of the heroic myth and takes a huge step towards more realistic characterized depictions in the western genre.
