 A brit Hammer horrorművek – Ingrid Pitt mellett – számtalan női vámpírfilmmel megajándékozta a műfajt, a magyar származású Sasdy kultikus alkotása talán a legegyedibb ebből a kínálatból. A Báthory Erzsébet legendáját feldolgozó rémdráma homlokegyenest szembe megy a Borowczyk-féle erkölcstelen mesék elemelt, lágyra szűrt megközelítésével: egy rideg és komor történelmi film veretes köntösébe bújtatja a hírhedt vérgrófnő esetét, nemesi intrikákkal és politikai összeesküvésekkel hitelesítve az eredendően természetfeletti mesét, amelyben a szüntelen ifjúság, szexuális étvágy és vonzerő érdekében zajlik egyfajta kíméletlen kizsákmányolás – bő ötven évvel megelőzve a Szer testhorrorját.

British Hammer horror works, in which Ingrid Pitt played a part, gifted the genre with dozens of female vampire movies, of which perhaps the most unique is the cult piece by Budapest-born Peter Sasdy. The horror adapting the legend of Erzsébet Báthory runs directly counter to the elevated, soft-focus approach of Borowczyk-style tales of immorality: he hides the case of the infamous blood countess in the eloquent guise of an austere and sombre historical film, authenticating the intrinsically supernatural story with intrigues of the nobility and political conspiracies, in which there is a kind of cruel exploitation in the interest of perpetual youth, sexual appetite and attraction – preceding body horror shocker The Substance by a good 50 years.
