Az egész világon egyedülálló épülettípus a szocialista palotáké. Stílusuk igen sokféle: a Moszkvai Állami Egyetem szocreál felhőkarcolója évszázadok irányzatait gyúrta egybe, a berlini Köztársasági Palota megpróbált modernebb lenni a modernnél is, míg a gigantikus Parlament Palotáját neoklasszicista, birodalmi stílusba csomagolták Bukarestben. Amiben közösek, az az, hogy mindannyian az ország, a nép hatalmát hirdették, és igyekeztek valamiben – magasságban, kiterjedésben, gazdagságban – felülmúlni elődeiket és nyugati versenytársaikat. Hogy ez mennyire sikerült? A filmben tervezők, felhasználók, dolgozók, néhol az előttük fotózkodó emberek mesélnek az épületekről.

Palace for the People tells the stories of the four most iconic buildings of the socialist era in Eastern Europe in the second half of the 20th century. The National Palace of Culture in Sofia, Moscow State University, Palace of the Parliament in Bucharest, Palace of Serbia in Belgrade, Palace of the Republic in Berlin are unique architectural creatures that resulted from a time when the collective good was the principal policy of the socialist state. Now that socialism is over it's time to go back and reveal their hidden secrets. This film provides a "snapshot" of each palace, commented on by their architects, former or current directors or ordinary people who worked in them.

Hogy milyen új építészeti alkotásokra volt legbüszkébb a magyar állam 1969-ben, mikor ez a kisfilm készült? Szerepel benne persze számos középület Tatabányától Debrecenig, kollégiumok, mozik és ipari létesítmények. Megcsodálhatjuk Salgótarján új városközpontját, a frissen átadott balatoni hoteleket, és természetesen a budapesti Körszállót is. Ám mindenek előtt a budavári rekonstrukcióra hívják fel a figyelmünket benne, azon belül is az átalakított Budavári Palotára, mely többé nem a hatalom szimbóluma, hanem a kultúra helyszíne lesz. Nem csak azért érdemes beülni rá, hogy megismerjük a korszak építészetét, de a korabeli propagandafilmes eszközök is tanulsággal szolgálnak.

The beginning of the film presents the reconstructions of the Buda Castle District in the ‘60s, then proceeds to give a broad perspective of the Hungarian construction projects of the era by focusing on public buildings. Among others, the film introduces the new city centre of Salgótarján, the university dormitories of Eger, Miskolc and Debrecen, the movie theatre of Tatabánya, the Lake Balaton resorts, the Round Hotel of Budapest, as well as various industrial facilities.
